Got a Tip?

Criterion Teases ‘Ghost World,’ ‘Sixteen Candles,’ And More 2017 Releases

As the clock rolled over to 2017, The Criterion Collection teased fans with what they can expect across the next twelve months with their annual, clue packed drawing. And as they have done for several years now, the folks at The Criterion Cast have puzzled about as much as they can, not just based on the artwork, but also using evidence from Criterion’s website, what’s playing on FilmStruck, and what sister company Janus Films have been bringing back to cinemas.

So, what does it all mean? Well, apparently we can expect a pretty interesting mix of movies in the months ahead, including more contemporary fare like Terry Zwigoff‘s terrific “Ghost World” (which has been rumored for years now) and John Hughes‘ classic “Sixteen Candles” (Criterion already has a page for the director). Other titles leaning more on the boutique label’s traditionally arthouse side include Jacques Audiard‘s “Dheepan” (the company has a had a tight relationship with IFC Films for a while), Nicholas Ray‘s B-movie “They Live By Night,” Andrei Tarkovsky‘s “Stalker,” and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s “Mysterious Object At Noon.” Other titles of note include “Tampopo” (recently re-released by Janus) and the classic “A Farewell To Arms.”

Head over to The Criterion Cast for their full, annotated look at the drawing and list of titles on the way. Check out the drawing below.
