Netflix made waves when it announced that “Iron Fist” was canceled after only two seasons on the streaming service. The waves weren’t caused by fan uproar over “Iron Fist” not coming back. Those people are few and far between. But mainly, people saw this move from Netflix as the first official sign that the company’s relationship with Marvel TV could be a bit rocky. Well, according to the Netflix CEO, that’s not the case at all.
During a recent earnings report conference call (via Inverse), CEO Ted Sarandos was asked about the future of the Marvel/Netflix TV series. His response was short, sweet, and definitely blunt. “Those shows are for us to cancel,” he said, “and we’re super happy with their performance so far.”
This statement comes after speculation and rumors about the future of the Netflix superhero shows. Many believed that “Iron Fist” could see a move to the Disney streaming service, and it was a sign that the Mouse House was looking to collect all its characters from the Netflix agreement. But clearly, as Sarandos plainly says, any decisions about the future of those series, which include “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “The Punisher,” and “The Defenders,” are completely up to the streaming service and not Disney.
With “Daredevil” season 3 hitting Netflix on Friday (and is actually pretty good) and “The Punisher” season 2 in production, it doesn’t look like the streaming giant is getting out of the Marvel TV business anytime soon. “Jessica Jones” is still in development on season 3, and no word has been made about the future of “Luke Cage.” So it appears that really the rumors and speculation are much ado about nothing. If anything, all it says is what we already knew — “Iron Fist” was horrible and fans didn’t watch it.
“Daredevil” returns on October 19.
