It’s unlikely that Idris Elba will ever become James Bond, as the actor has pointed out a number of times before. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see him suit up as a spy soon enough. You see, the actor has just signed on to produce and star in a new espionage flick over at Apple that might just scratch that James Bond itch for fans.
According to Deadline, Apple has won an auction to become the studio behind an upcoming, untitled spy film that will star Idris Elba. Details on the plot are slim, as the report only describes it as set in Africa and carrying “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” vibes, as a spy-romance. Elba will also produce the film alongside Simon Kinberg and his Genre Films partner Audrey Chon.
The addition of Kinberg to the project is worth noting because of what the producer has been working on recently. The untitled Idris Elba film is just one of the spy flicks that Kinberg has been working on, with his next feature being the female-led ensemble action film, “355,” which is set to star Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penelope Cruz, Diane Kruger, and Fan Bingbing. No release date for that film has been announced.
Elba is one of the biggest stars in the world, having appeared in a number of high-profile projects recently including “Hobbs & Shaw” and the much-maligned “Cats.” He’s next expected to appear in the festival film, “Concrete Cowboy,” and he has signed on to star in a new Netflix project, as well as the upcoming feature film from George Miller. In the latter, he’ll star opposite none other than Tilda Swinton.
It’s unclear when we might see his spy film land at Apple, as the project doesn’t even have a director attached. But when it does, we’re sure fans will watch it and wonder if we’re getting a hint at what Elba might have brought to the Bond role.
