Hulu isn’t waiting for the finale to decide the fate of “Furious.” The streamer has renewed the Emmy Rossum-led thriller for Season 2, with creator Elizabeth Meriwether and Rossum both returning as executive producers.
The renewal arrives just days before the first-season finale, which will stream Monday, August 31. More importantly for Hulu, the series appears to have gained viewers as its run progressed rather than peaking with its premiere. According to the streamer, one-day views for Episode 7 were up 40% compared with the premiere.
Hulu did not provide raw viewing figures, so it’s difficult to compare the show directly with the platform’s other recent dramas. Still, that kind of week-to-week growth is encouraging at a time when streaming series often face an uphill battle to maintain attention beyond their opening weekends.
“Furious” has also been a critical success. The series debuted with a 100% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and currently sits at 98%. The Playlist’s review was similarly enthusiastic, giving the series a B+ and praising Rossum and Petticrew’s performances while calling it a “gripping Epstein-esque revenge thriller.”
Created and written by Meriwether, best known for creating “New Girl,” the thriller stars Rossum as Alice Black, an FBI agent pursuing a calculating female serial killer played by Lola Petticrew. However, as their respective pursuits of justice begin to intersect, the series increasingly blurs the moral distinction between investigator and killer.
Rossum and Meriwether also recently spoke on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast about the series’ dark humor, its complicated treatment of trauma, and the connection between Alice and Catherine in Petticrew.
The ensemble also includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Scoot McNairy, with Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang, and Steve Way appearing as guest stars.
Meriwether executive produces alongside Rossum through her Composition 8 banner, as well as Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, and Sam Hoffman. Brian Kirk executive produces and directed the first two episodes. 20th Television and Searchlight Television produce the series.
Hulu has not yet revealed story details, additional casting, an episode count, or a production timeline for Season 2. Given the timing of the renewal, however, the announcement gives “Furious” some momentum heading into its first-season finale.
Season 1 of “Furious” is streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S., as well as Disney+ internationally. The finale arrives August 31.
