With this year’s Summer Movie Season up in the air, depending on how quickly theaters can reopen to larger capacities and if studios will have the confidence to release blockbusters, it appears that Amazon Prime Video is going ahead and planning its tentpole summer release on the streaming platform by snatching up the distribution rights to the new sci-fi action film, “The Tomorrow War.”

According to Amazon, the studio has nabbed the distribution rights for the Chris Pratt-starring film, “The Tomorrow War,” and plans to release the feature on Prime Video on July 2, just in time for the big summer holiday weekend. Directed by Chris McKay, “The Tomorrow War” tells the story of a group of present-day people that are pulled 30 years into the future to help fight a war against an alien invader. The film was originally set to be released last year by Paramount, but with the pandemic throwing everyone for a loop, Amazon swooped in to grab the rights.
“I’m so proud of this incredible cast and crew who worked under challenging circumstances to create a unique, original sci-fi action movie… something that’s increasingly rare,” said McKay. “Watching this team of actors and artisans effortlessly blend action, horror, comedy, and drama was a dream come true for me … and I hope will thrill audiences this summer.”
Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, added, “‘The Tomorrow War’ will be a global event that will surprise and delight our customers around the world. Director Chris McKay has brilliantly crafted this unique, action-packed sci-fi escape that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats and tug on their heartstrings with its father-daughter storyline. We couldn’t be happier to continue our relationship with Chris Pratt—who brings such dynamic star power to the film—along with David Ellison and the Skydance team, as we share this exciting film with fans.”
Joining Chris Pratt in the cast of “The Tomorrow War” are Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, and J.K. Simmons. As mentioned, the film comes from Chris McKay, who previously helmed the animated hit, “The LEGO Batman Movie.”
