Park Chan-Wook To Direct ‘The Sympathizer’ TV Series For A24

When you think of South Korean cinema, you probably think of a couple of names immediately. The first is likely Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind the recent feature, “Parasite.” The other name that a lot of folks will immediately think about is Park Chan-Wook, the filmmaker behind features such as “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance,” “Oldboy,” and “The Handmaiden.” Park Chan-Wook has also helmed some English-language projects, including “Stoker” and the 2018 TV series, “The Little Drummer Girl.” And it appears he’s got another Hollywood production on the way with “The Sympathizer.”

According to author Viet Thanh Nguyen, Park Chan-Wook is set to direct “The Sympathizer,” based on the novel by the aforementioned writer. The series will be produced by A24 and tell the story of a half-French, half-Vietnamese man that served as a communist spy during the Vietnam War. The story follows the man’s life in the final days of the conflict and while in exile. “The Sympathizer” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2016.

As mentioned, Park Chan-Wook is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working today and every project that carries his name is an immediate must-see for film fans. And while we haven’t seen any new projects from the filmmaker since 2018’s ‘Drummer Girl,’ the director is apparently in the middle of production on a new feature, “Decision to Leave,” which is likely to be released sometime later this year.

It’s unclear when we might see “The Sympathizer” arrive on TV. It’s also unclear where we might see the show land, though a streaming option does seem most likely, nowadays, right? That said, perhaps the biggest A24 TV hit so far, “Euphoria,” is doing really well on HBO, so maybe we could see the WarnerMedia network step in to nab the series. Regardless, there will likely be quite a bit of interest in anything with Park Chan-Wook’s name.
