‘The Babadook’ 10th Anniversary Trailer: Jennifer Kent’s Modern Classic Gets Theatrical Re-Release In September

A nerdy way to gauge how old you’re becoming is with film anniversaries. Sometimes, you find out a film is celebrating an anniversary and it just feels like yesterday it was released. That’s how I’m feeling with the news that “The Babadook” is turning 10 this year. Honestly, if you told me “The Babadook” came out in 2019, I would have absolutely believed you.

Alas, the film is celebrating its 10th birthday, and it’s getting a special theatrical release to celebrate the occasion. For those who haven’t seen the film, “The Babadook” follows the story of a mother and son who are seemingly haunted by a creepy character from a children’s book.

“The Babadook” stars Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Hayley McElhinney, Daniel Henshall, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear. The film comes from director Jennifer Kent and served as her breakout. Since then, she directed the 2018 film, “The Nightingale” as well as an episode of “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”

“The Babadook” returns to theaters on September 19. You can watch the new trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.
