‘Butterfly’ Trailer: Itonje Søimer Guttormsen’s Drama Sees Renate Reinsv & Helene Bjørneby Play Mourning Estranged Sisters Reuniting In The Canary Islands

Norwegian actress Renate Reinsv has been busy in recent memory with acclaimed feature work in “The Worst Person In The World,” “A Different Man,” “Sentimental Value,” and has been getting buzz for her new movie “Fjord,” starring opposite Sebastian Stan and helmed by Cristian Mungiu (as the movie won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year). Well, she has another film coming down the pipeline in 2026 with “Butterfly” from writer/director Itonje Søimer Guttormsen (“Gritt,” “Retrett”).

A trailer for the drama has made its way online, featuring two sisters, played by Reisv and Helene Bjørneby (the two previously seen in “The Worst Person In The World”), in a scenic Spanish resort on the Canary Islands as they come together after the tragic death of their parents.

An official synopsis for the pic that made it’s debut at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2026:

Starring Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value,” “Fjord”) and Helene Bjørneby (“The Worst Person in the World”), Butterfly is an intriguing and mystical drama with touches of comedy about the bonds of family and the pull of the past, set in the striking Canary Islands, from writer/director Itonje Søimer Guttormsen in her second feature. Half-sisters Diana (Bjørneby) and Lily (Reinsve) grew up as the only resident children at an all-inclusive resort in Gran Canaria, where their uninhibited mother, Vera, worked as a tour guide. Twenty-five years later, they are estranged, having both created distance from the island and from each other. Diana works as a kindergarten teacher in a small town in Norway, while Lily is a retired model and alternative artist in Hamburg’s art scene. Now they are forced to return to the island to deal with the aftermath of their mother’s sudden death at an esoteric retreat in the mountains. The reunion sets them headfirst into a journey of revelations about their mother’s life, their shared childhood, and the hidden heart of the tourist island.
