Marvel Exec Says ‘Nova’ Series Is An Ensemble With Shades Of ‘Star Trek’ & ‘Battlestar Galactica’

Nova” is a series that has been reportedly in development for quite some time. And it’s also a series that has a lot of fan expectations, as the “Nova” comic books are some of the most beloved in Marvel, even though Richard Ryder might be more of a B-list character. However, according to one of Marvel’s executives, don’t put the cosmic cart before the horse, as just because “Nova” is in development it doesn’t necessarily mean the show is a guarantee.

In a new interview with Phase Zero, Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum cautioned that while a “Nova” series is in development, not everything Marvel develops turns into a show, suggesting they’re becoming much more cautious and not announcing most projects until they are ready and have been green-lit.

“So, Nova is in development right now, but I’ll say we are developing more than we make,” he cautioned. “This is part of the new Marvel; we should talk about this. Because at Marvel, everything has a spotlight on it, and everyone gets super excited, and we love Nova, and we want to get it right.”

“So it’s in development. We’ve got a few things in development, and we’re not going to go [forward] on a show until we are happy with the pilot and the [show] bible. So it is in development now.”

Asked how a cosmic Marvel TV series like “Nova” would work given that they haven’t really done the cosmic side of the universe on TV yet, Winderbaum teased some of the things that will influence the show.

“I’ve really been inspired by what ‘[Star] Trek’ has been doing over the last few years. I think those shows are incredible; that’s why we hired [‘Picard’ showrunner] Terry [Matalas] to do ‘Vision Quest’ with us,” he said. “The ‘Nova’ that is being developed right now is really an amazing ensemble piece. I shouldn’t say too much, but it’s a great cast of characters—it’s got shades of ‘Trek,’ it’s got shades of ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ but it also feels like if you know those comics, you know how heated that Richard Ryder world can get and it certainly embraces all that.”
