It makes a lot of sense when you learn that Ian Tuason, writer/director of A24’s upcoming horror film “undertone,” has three favorite movies in the genre: “The Exorcist,” “The Blair Witch Project,” and “Paranormal Activity.” The upcoming movie, which also marks Tuason’s feature debut, looks to be the perfect mash-up of the three on his list. It has a found footage element much like ‘Blair Witch,’ audio files of a couple in bed which resemble ‘Paranormal,’ and demonic possession similar to ‘Exorcist.’ It should come as no surprise that Tuason has been tapped to helm the upcoming ‘Paranormal Activity’ reboot. With “undertone” set to screen at next month’s Sundance Film Festival, and a theatrical date set up by A24 for March 13, Tuason’s star is definitely on the rise.
The movie stars Nina Kiri, Kris Holden-Ried, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, Jeff Yung, Sarah Beaudin, and Brian Quintero. Producers are Cody Calahan and Dan Slater. The film stars Nina Kirias Evy, a woman who hosts a paranormal podcast with her friend Justin (Kris Holden-Ried), where she is the skeptic to his believer. After moving back home to become a caregiver to her dying mother (Michèle Duquet), she is sent recordings of a married couple experiencing paranormal noises in their home, drawing Evy into fear and paranoia.
Synopsis:
A podcast host covering spooky content moves in to care for her dying mother. When sent recordings of a pregnant couple’s paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, each tape pushing her toward madness.
A24 will release “undertone” in theaters on March 13.
