Stanley Kwan’s “Center Stage” understands tragedy not as a simple biography, but as a haunting conversation between performance, memory, and myth.

Today, we’re exclusively premiering the trailer for the new 4K restoration of Kwan’s landmark 1991 biopic, starring Maggie Cheung in one of her signature roles. The film returns to North American theaters beginning August 7 in celebration of its 35th anniversary.
Cheung stars as Ruan, often described as the “Greta Garbo of China,” whose moving and emotive screen presence made her one of the defining figures of Chinese silent cinema. But Ruan’s private life became relentless fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids, eventually mirroring the melodramas that brought her fame. She died by suicide at just 24.
Kwan’s film takes an unconventional approach to the biopic, blending lush period drama, archival footage, and metatextual documentary sequences in which Cheung reflects on Ruan’s legacy and the responsibility of embodying a figure whose art, image, and tragedy have become inseparable. The result has long been regarded as one of Kwan’s major achievements and a defining showcase for Cheung.
Presented by Fortune Star Media Limited, the new 4K restoration was carried out from the original 35mm negative and optical soundtrack. The materials were repaired, cleaned, and scanned in Hong Kong, then digitally restored in 4K resolution by L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy. The restoration was endorsed by Kwan, with color correction completed by Interface Video Production Ltd in Hong Kong.
Written by Peggy Chiao and Kang-Chien Chiu, “Center Stage” also stars Chin Han, Tony Ka Fai Leung, Carina Lau, Waise Lee, Li-li Li, Lawrence Ng, Cecilia Yip, and Kelvin Wong. Jackie Chan, Willie Chan, Leonard Ho, Siu-Ming Tsui, and Yongning Zhang produced, with Jackie Chan also serving as executive producer.
