Carrie White has endured abusive parenting, high-school humiliation, telekinetic awakening, and one catastrophically bloody prom night across several generations of screen adaptations. Now, Mike Flanagan is bringing Stephen King’s first published novel into the social-media era—and stretching its mounting cruelty across an entire television season.

During the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Prime Video debuted the first teaser for “Carrie” and announced that all eight episodes will premiere globally on October 7. The series marks the first episodic television adaptation of King’s 1974 novel, following theatrical films from Brian De Palma and Kimberly Peirce, as well as the 2002 television movie starring Angela Bettis.
Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager raised by her fiercely controlling mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After the sudden death of her father forces Carrie into public high school, she becomes the target of a viral bullying scandal while beginning to discover the telekinetic abilities developing alongside her adolescence.
That contemporary framing gives Flanagan considerably more room to examine how humiliation spreads through a community—and how dozens of seemingly minor choices ultimately converge on the story’s infamous prom night. Prime Video describes the adaptation as an exploration of kindness and cruelty that complicates whether Carrie should be understood as a victim, monster, hero, or something less easily categorized.
The series continues Flanagan’s extensive relationship with King’s writing following his feature adaptations of “Gerald’s Game,” “Doctor Sleep,” and “The Life of Chuck.” He serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on “Carrie” and directs four of its eight episodes. King is also an executive producer.
The ensemble includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
The series arrives during the 50th anniversary year of De Palma’s landmark 1976 adaptation, which earned Academy Award nominations for Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. Rather than attempting another condensed retelling, however, Flanagan’s version appears designed to linger over the emotional and social machinery that transforms Carrie’s adolescence into a tragedy.
