Canadian filmmaker Megan Park and Margot Robbie‘s banner LuckyChap are reuniting for a new comedy film that has been scooped up by Apple Original Films after a heated bidding war.
Both written and directed by Park, the movie saw interest from all sorts of traditional studios and streaming services, such as Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Amazon, and Netflix, according to THR. The number of suitors outlined here would be a clear sign of eagerness to secure the project, which also has the involvement of FilmNation.
As mentioned by the outlet, the film is being compared to a mix of late ’90s comedies like Adam Sandler‘s “Big Daddy” and Julia Roberts‘ “Stepmom,” suggesting we’re looking at a family-centric (makeshift/blended) comedy here. They also added the following description, as it will “center on a woman finding out that her much older boyfriend has a wife and kids when they unexpectedly show up on her doorstep. Despite a situation that puts the two women at odds with each other, the protagonist finds herself thrust into a role of taking care of the sassy kids.”
Park’s last film, “My Old Ass,” was released by Amazon MGM Studios, which starred newcomer Maisy Stella as the younger version of Elliot, a teenage girl who converses with her older self, played by Aubrey Plaza, while tripping on mushrooms on her family’s farm in Muskoka Lakes (cottage country in Ontario, Canada), which gives us hope for another wild comedy with this untitled flick.
The relationship between Megan Park and LuckyChap keeps growing and goes back to “My Old Ass,” and they had previously re-teamed for the young adult series “Sterling Point,” which ended up at Prime Video. As the announcement from January revealed, Park is set to direct and co-showrun the Amazon show with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
