“Avengers: Doomsday” has been the main topic of conversation for weeks, even with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” heading to theaters this weekend (The Playlist’s review has dropped today), as the pic was highlighted during San Diego Comic-Con after some neat costumes were on display (reveaing multi-colored Latveria witches, leading many to think that a Wanda Maximoff variant might be connected there) and they highlighted the film at the Marvel Studios promotion push at the popular convention. Thankfully, someone had the common sense to ask The Russo Brothers about some of the missing characters, despite the massive lineup.
In an Entertainment Tonight interview after the Hall H presentation in the press line, Joe Russo was directly asked about Elizabeth Olsen‘s Scarlet Witch and Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel. Briefly responding with, “There are always more surprises.”

They were also asked whether, given that much of the original “X-Men” cast came back for the “Doomsday” story, would the audience learn the fates of Halle Berry‘s Storm and Famke Janssen‘s Jean Grey (both actresses have said in the past they weren’t asked back).
Anthony Russo responded by stating, “We won’t answer specifically. But I will say this: the history of the X-Men is really special to us; all of those characters are loved. And we really thought about their history, so they feed into this movie in a very meaningful way.”
Another missing female character is Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau (the heroine was a key part of both “WandaVision” and “The Marvels“), and the actress spoke directly with Deadline at Comic-Con, where she didn’t sound very confident about coming back anytime soon. “I miss Monica as much as you guys do…I wish her well, and I’m excited to see what they do next,” she told the trade outlet about Rambeau’s MCU return. Kind of odd since Rambeau woke up at the end of “The Marvels” being greeted by Kelsey Grammer‘s Beast and a variant of Binary.
“Avengers: Doomsday” arrives on December 18, and we’ll be curious how it’s ultimately received and whether it’ll match the critical response of the Russos’ previous two MCU efforts.
