Got a Tip?

Barry Keoghan Says He’d Love To Do More Joker But Has Not Heard A Thing About The Next Appearance

With “The Penguin” being a massive hit for HBO and Max, as well as “The Batman: Part II” gearing up to begin production next year, there is a ton of speculation about Matt Reeves’ Bat-universe. Namely, everyone wants to know who the next big villain might be, with a good number of folks wanting to give Barry Keoghan’s Joker a chance at the spotlight.

Speaking on a new episode of the “Happy. Sad. Confused.” podcast, Barry Keoghan is asked about what’s next for his version of Joker, who appeared briefly in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” For those who don’t remember, Keoghan’s Joker appeared briefly at the end of the film, as well as in a deleted scene as an inmate at Arkham and was seen being used almost like a Hannibal Lecter-style tool for Batman.

Keoghan understands that if he is given a chance to really dig deep into his version of Joker, it would put him right up against some of the best actors in the world. Hell, it’s a role that has won two different actors Oscars.

“The people before me have [turned in iconic performances]. It’s iconic, it’s a big one,” Keoghan said.

“But I am going to say that if the opportunity came about, yes, I’d love to explore and given the opportunity, really dive into [the character],” he added. “But I’ve not been contacted and I’ve not heard anything, so I can’t…” he trailed off suggesting more Joker is up in the air.

Keoghan said that even as small as the role was, he put a lot of work into preparation and already has figured out a backstory for the character.

“I did,” he said about developing a narrative for the Joker that wasn’t on screen. “Even the make-up process, that was a lot of talk, and a lot of staying still cause it was six hours of [prosethetics].”

Obviously, we don’t know who the villain of “The Batman: Part II” will be. It could very well be Keoghan’s Joker. But even if it isn’t, you have to assume at some point DC Studios and Warner Bros. would want to explore it a bit more. We’ll just have to wait and see.
