'Beautiful Losers' Features Cat Power, Air, Tom Waits And A Whole Ton Of Money Mark

Ask and ye shall receive. Earlier this month we did our review of the very excellent art-collective documentary “Beautiful Losers,” and we started asking around our pals for a list of the excellent music in the film.

But to back up a sec… Directed by Aaron Rose, the film features a loose-knit group of like minded underground/DIY artists and features appearances by agit-prop designer Shepard Fairey, professional skater, turned artist Ed Templeton, San Franciscan folk artist Margaret Kilgallen, graffiti artist Barry McGee, childlike painter Chris Johanson, filmmaker and graphic designer Geoff McFetridge, director Mike Mills (“Thumbsucker”), outre film director Harmony Korine (“Kids”), painter Thomas Campbell and many more.

As we mentioned a few months ago, Beastie Boy collaborator/keyboardist Money Mark (Mark Nishita) was asked to compose the score, which is apropos considering he’s friends and hung out with a lot of the original players during their NY heyday.

Apart from a very long collection songs of song composed specifically for the film and a few old songs from his very winsome 1998 album, Push The Button, Money Mark scored the majority of the film, but the doc does also features songs by Air, Cat Power, Tom Waits, Kurtis Blow, Unsane and Sam Spiegel, aka Squeaky Clean, who produced the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Show Your Bones, produced some of Karen O’s still unreleased solo album and helped her out on the music she’s composing to Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are” (Spiegel is Jonze’s younger brother).

We not only received all the music in the film, we received the titles of every original music cue Mark wrote for the film which looks like it’s about 20 different tracks. There’s no soundtrack for “Beautiful Losers” yet, but who knows, maybe this will force one out there. At the very least make one of your own with the tracks that do exist out there and can be bought from various digital distributors.
