Sure, it’s been overshadowed in more recent years, but it’s hard to discount the massive hit that Netflix had with “Bird Box” in late-2018. Within 28 days of release, the Sandra Bullock horror film skyrocketed in viewership becoming the most-viewed film in Netflix’s history. Over time, it would be unseated by “Red Notice” (2021) and “Don’t Look Up” (2021), but the film still ranks at #3 all-time, which is crazy for a film that was released more than four years ago. Well, all that to say, Netflix knows “Bird Box” was a global phenomenon, and now, the streamer wants to expand the franchise with its first spinoff, “Bird Box Barcelona.”

As seen in the new teaser for “Bird Box Barcelona,” the film tells the story of what happened to one man, Sebastian, as the threat spreads across the world. What’s the threat? As seen in the original “Bird Box,” it’s a mysterious entity that drives people to kill themselves when they look at it. So, basically, this first spinoff is just “Bird Box,” but this time, it’s in Barcelona. Not the most exciting premise, but also, you can’t blame Netflix for wanting to strike gold again.
The film stars Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia. “Bird Box Barcelona” is directed by the duo of Álex Pastor and David Pastor.
