Film fans would never confuse director Bong Joon Ho with someone that makes typical films. Look at his recent filmography— “The Host,” “Mother,” “Snowpiercer,” “Okja,” and “Parasite.” On paper, the synopsis for each sounds like it could fit nicely in a subgenre of film. “Snowpiercer” is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller. “The Host” is a monster film. “Mother” is a crime thriller. But when you actually watch the film, there is something else going on entirely. So, when Bong Joon Ho says he wants to make a musical, as he did in a recent interview with Empire, you have to immediately realize that a Bong musical is different than “La La Land.”

“I would love to make a musical,” he said. “Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, fuck this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. Look, everyone at The Playlist is down for whatever Bong Joon Ho releases from here until the end of time (though that might not be much longer given how badly 2020 has gone for most people). Of course, saying you want to make a film and actually making a film are two completely different things. If saying you want to make something is all it took, we would have watched “Gambit” four years ago. But with “Parasite” winning the multiple Oscars this year, Director Bong basically has a golden ticket to get anything made. So, if he’s serious about this crazy musical, we’re sure studios would line up to produce it.
So, let’s make it happen!
