'Home Alone': Chris Columbus Says Disney Is "Wasting Its Time" With Reboot

Just as we received news that Disney will remake “Lilo & Stitch” as a live-action film, so comes Chris Columbus with the perfect response to Disney remaking beloved films, as he recently slammed the upcoming remake of “Home Alone.”

In an extensive new interview with Insider, Columbus talked about the recently announced “Home Alone” reboot for Disney+, which actually has a pretty decent cast including Kenan Thompson, Rob Delaney, Ellie Kemper, and “Jojo Rabbit’s” Archie Yates for 2021, and it seems like Columbus isn’t sold.

“Nobody got in touch with me about it, and it’s a waste of time as far as I’m concerned,” Columbus said in reference to the upcoming reboot. “What’s the point? I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of ‘Home Alone.’ You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it? It’s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film — a live-action version of that. What’s the point? It’s been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.”

Columbus even acknowledges that he did resort to that in “Home Alone 2,” which he describes as “basically a remake of the first” movie.

In a different interview with The Independent, the filmmaker took particular insult with the rumored Ryan Reynolds-starring remake from a couple of years ago. “When I read about something called ‘Stoned Alone‘, they were going to do with Ryan – it was an R-rated ‘Home Alone’ movie about stoners – I thought to myself, ‘This is just an insult to the art of cinema,'” Columbus said. “Watch the original! Forget about it. It’s just never going to be as good.”
