'Cold War' & 'Destroyer' Are Tough Sells But That's Exactly Why You Should See Them [AYT Podcast]

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I discuss tough sells at the cinema and kick off the new year by cleaning up a few more titles from 2018. We wanted to make time for both “Cold War” and “Destroyer” as they make their way into more theaters in the coming weeks. Things kick off as we focus on “Cold War,” an uncompromisingly beautiful romance about two people who just can’t make things work, despite their obvious passion for each other.

When the film premiered at Cannes last year, Pawel Pawlikowski came away with the Best Director award and a distribution deal with Amazon Pictures. Like his previous, Oscar-winning, film, “Ida,” “Cold War” is shot in gorgeous black and white with an old school 4×3 aspect ration, and the results are stunning. It’s a strong film that nonetheless is a tough sell for US audiences. We hope you seek it out.

“Destroyer” is the latest effort from director Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation“), this one’s a gritty crime character study with a powerhouse lead performance by Nicole Kidman, who’s just great in the film. The film landed on Joe’s top ten on our episode last week and so we’re both excited for audiences to catch up with it and to discuss more at length.
