Diablo Cody Signs On To Write A TV Reboot Of Popular '70s Sitcom 'Alice'

Lately, the news about reboots and remakes seems to focus on properties created within the last decade. However, according to Variety, Fox has teamed up with acclaimed screenwriter Diablo Cody for a new remake of a popular TV series from 40 years ago. And given the subject matter, it looks like now seems like the perfect time to revisit “Alice.”

“Alice,” itself a TV spin-off taken from Martin Scorsese‘s 1974 film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” starring Ellen Burstyn and Kris Kristofferson, tells the story of a Long Island housewife, Alice, that leaves her horrible husband and hits the road to find a life of her own. Settling in Arizona, alongside her teen son, Alice tries to make good as a waitress at a roadside diner. No doubt, the political climate and societal issues have changed quite a bit from when “Alice” first premiered as a sitcom in 1976, and Cody seems like one of the best choices to bring a 2018 female perspective to the long-running sitcom.

As mentioned, “Alice” was one of the biggest shows in the late-‘70s/early-‘80s. Running for nine seasons and over 200 episodes, “Alice” was a phenomenon. The sitcom was so popular, it even spawned a spin-off, titled “Flo,” which ran for two seasons.

Cody has had a busy 2018, as her latest feature film “Tully” was released earlier this year, teaming her with her “Young Adult” director Jason Reitman. Coming up next for the writer, films “Time and a Half” and a musical based on the book series “Sweet Valley High” are currently in development. “Alice” is far from the first foray into TV for the writer, either. Recently, she created and wrote on the Amazon series “One Mississippi.” Before then, her most famous TV work came as creator and writer on “United States of Tara.”

There’s no release date set for “Alice,” as Fox only ordered a pilot for the series. However, given the popularity of Cody and the potential of yet another TV reboot, it would stand to reason that Fox is going to give “Alice” a better chance than most pilots.
