Over the last few days, “Justice League” has been making headlines yet again, due to the film’s rather bittersweet two-year anniversary. Celebrating the film’s release, stars such as Jason Momoa, Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, and Gal Gadot not only shared pictures from the film, but also showed their support for the social media campaign #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, which led to many fans wondering if, after all this time, Warner Bros. is ready to release Zack Snyder’s original vision for the superhero film. Well, apparently that’s not the case.
According to THR, despite the groundswell of support over the last few days, specifically with some of the most high-profile endorsements the movement has seen yet, WB has no plans to announce a release of the Snyder Cut of “Justice League.” Nope, not even on HBO Max, which seemed to be the prevailing speculation over the last few days.
That being said, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut got another big endorsement during that time. However, it wasn’t from Zack Snyder or any of the other cast and crew from the film. Instead, it came from a former WB executive and former president of DC Entertainment, Diane Nelson. Instead of just pushing the hashtag on her Twitter, Nelson decided to share a text message exchange between her and a podcaster about the idea of Snyder’s original vision of the film coming to fruition.
“If Zack feels he had the time and resources to finish a cut to his satisfaction and he would like fans to see it, nothing would make me happier than for him to have that opportunity,” Nelson wrote. “He earned it and was not only a great filmmaking talent but a true gentleman and professional in all his dealings with the Studio and DC.”
Now, even though this reads as full support for the mythical Snyder Cut, Nelson’s support does come with a caveat. She wants the cut of the film to be of the satisfaction of Snyder. This likely rules out her supporting the release of the assembly cut, which is what seems to be the only version of Snyder’s original vision that exists. That cut seems to include missing scenes, unfinished VFX, and other post-production elements that would make the film ready to be consumed by fans.
So, in that case, it’s, once again, unlikely that WB would put any significant amount of money into the unfinished cut of the film for it to be released. And even if they would, is Zack Snyder willing to devote time and effort to a film that is so far behind him?
Either way, this is likely a moot point, as it’s clear that WB doesn’t have plans to release the film. And if the combined efforts of the “Justice League” cast and a former WB executive can’t sway the corporation’s opinion, then there doesn’t seem like much hope is left.
