Drew Goddard To Write (& Possibly Direct) 'Sabrina' Adaptation, Leaving 'X-Force' In "Limbo"

Drew Goddard is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today. He began his career as one of the biggest TV writers around, with credits like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Alias,” and “Lost.” His transition into films began with the breakout film “Cabin in the Woods,” and was followed up by his Oscar-nominated script for “The Martian” and his recent directorial effort “Bad Times at the El Royale.” The filmmaker has also had a number of superhero projects get announced and then fall apart, such as ‘Sinister Six,’ ‘Daredevil,’ and “X-Force.” And with the latter in “limbo,” it appears he’s ready to move on with something less superheroic.

According to Deadline, Goddard has been brought on to adapt the graphic novel, from author Nick Drnaso, “Sabrina” for the big screen, with an eye towards possibly directing the film, as well. “Sabrina” tells the story of a man that moves in with his best friend after his long-time girlfriend goes missing. However, after a video related to Sabrina’s disappearance goes viral, the man and his friend find themselves targeted by conspiracy theorists.

Not to take anything away from “Sabrina,” which sounds like an amazing project that is right up Goddard’s alley, but the real question around this move for the filmmaker is what it means for the aforementioned “X-Force.” With Disney now in complete control of Fox and its properties, “X-Force” was one of the few Marvel films being developed by Fox that seemed like it might survive the merger. After the successful launch of “Deadpool” and its sequel, “X-Force” seemed like the next logical film in the series, with the character played by Ryan Reynolds teaming with Domino (Zazie Beetz) and Cable (Josh Brolin) in their own superhero team-up film.

Goddard has been attached to write and direct the film for years now, and it seemed like it was an easy film to put into production before the Disney deal. Now that the merger is complete and Kevin Feige recently said that X-related films are likely years away, it appears that “X-Force” and Goddard’s involvement are no longer part of the plan. Deadline says that the film is in “limbo.”

Of course, perhaps we’re reading too much into this and it will all work out in the end. Either way, there’s a new Drew Goddard project to get excited about, and that’s always good news.
