First Look: Andrew Haigh’s ‘All Of Us Strangers’ With Paul Mescal & Andrew Scott Coming In December

You might be asking, where has British filmmaker Andrew Haigh been, and the answer is right here and under your nose. While he hasn’t made a feature-length film since 2017’s English coming-of-age movie, “Lean On Pete,” starring Charlie Plummer, Chloë Sevigny and Travis Fimmel, he was right back on it in 2021 with The BBC miniseries “The North Water” starring Colin Farrell, Jack O’Connell and Stephen Graham. And now he’s back with a new film, “All Of Us Strangers,” which looks like it will take him back to his more indie and English roots.

The film stars Andrew Scott of “Fleabag” fame and Paul Mescal, who is coming off the critically acclaimed indie, “Aftersun.” Mescal is all the rage right now and is so hot he’s set to lead “Gladiator 2” with Ridley Scott, Richard Linklater’sMerrily We Roll Along,” and the WWI drama “The History of Sound.” Claire Foy and Jamie Bell also star. Searchlight Pictures announced the film will be in theaters this year, December 2022, 2023.

Here’s the official synopsis:

One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (a screenwriter, played by Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal) that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home, where it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died thirty years before.

“All Of Us Strangers was written by Haigh and produced by Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Sarah Harvey, and the film was previously known as just “Strangers.”

While we’re at it and discussing Haigh, it’s a bit unfortunate that no one really seemed to see “The North Water.” While it did premiere on AMC in North America, the show was seemingly criminally overlooked and definitely was one of the best miniseries’ of that year (and on our Best of 2021 TV list). Either way, it’s great to have Haigh back and with a stellar cast to boot.

Searchlight Pictures will release “All Of Us Strangers” on December 2022, 2023, which means, like many films this year, uncertain about the film festival climate to do the SAG/WGA strike, it might overlook the festival circuit altogether. Alternatively, another strategy might be hoping that the strike is over by October, and who knows, AFI Film Festival in November could get a massive boost if that’s the case.
