New ‘Wonder Woman’ Movie Being “Written Right Now” According To James Gunn

While the DCU has a new Superman, Supergirl, at least three Green Lanterns, Hawkgirl, and a multitude of other DC Comics characters, there is an update concerning the future of “Wonder Woman” as DC Studios co-head James Gunn has announced that a new movie is in the works.

Gunn interviewed with Entertainment Weekly to promote his “Superman” reboot, where he dished about the upcoming series that would focus on the Amazons of Themyscira and revealed that a feature film with the beloved DC heroine is indeed happening.

Stating that development on the series is “slow moving, but it’s moving,” Gunn told EW, while confirming that a new Wonder Woman movie is “being written right now.”

We’re still in the dark about casting, but there have been signs that the studio would be moving away from Gal Gadot while the actress could end up with a secondary DC role like “Aquaman” actor Jason Momoa being tapped to play alien bounty hunter Lobo in “Superwoman: Woman of Tomorrow” (Momoa’s original dream superhero role).

We could theorize that actresses on the rise such as May Calamawy (“Moon Knight”), Adria Arjona (“Andor”), Ana de Armas (“Ballerina”), and recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro (“Top Gun: Maverick”) being in the right place in their careers to be brought into the DCU fold for a high-profile franchise role like Diana Prince. However, these are mostly just names fans have been throwing around, and we don’t know if anyone is being courted for the heroine at this point.

Meanwhile, the Batman recasting is also a bit of mystery despite a thicker/bulkier version briefly cameoed in the animated series “Creature Commandos,” who exactly will dawn the cowl and cape in “The Brave & The Bold” is a bit unknown for the moment despite the internet suggesting that Alan Ritchson (“Reacher”) and Brandon Sklenar (“1923”) would make good contenders. Gunn has previously dispelled rumors that Robert Pattinson‘s Batman would end up in the DCU, as the Matt Reeves Gotham projects are set in their own corner of Elseworlds.

This update is the first time that Warner Bros. or DC Studios has given us an update concerning Wonder Woman since a third feature film from Patty Jenkins and Gadot fizzled out before the DCU reset. With hints of a new “Justice League” event coming down the DC Studios pipeline, eventually, we always assumed a new Wonder Woman project was in the cards.
