It’s the day after Christmas and people are already getting into the “what’s next” 2017 spirit (to that end, here’s our The 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2017 feature). Entertainment Weekly is getting an early jump with a handful of first look photos from many most-anticipated movies from next year. The first one that stands out to us is Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.” While we’ve seen the trailer already, the magazine has bagged the first official photo from the WWII film. An ensemble drama, the movie features Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and One Direction star Harry Styles. But the star of the film? He’s a 19-year-old unknown: Fionn Whitehead.
“One of the key things you came across reading firsthand accounts of Dunkirk was how young and inexperienced these soldiers were,” Nolan told EW. “It felt very important to me, especially for Fionn’s part, to find somebody very new.” The young actor, who’s scored the gig of his life plays a British private named Tommy. Whitehead also appeared on set weeks before filming to prepare for the harsh conditions of the production. “I did a lot of swimming in a water-sodden wool uniform, hobnail boots, and with guns,” Whitehead says. “It was hard work, but I really enjoyed it. What’s life without a bit of a challenge?”
Umm, yeah, we’d get a little wet for Christopher Nolan too. EW also has first looks or new photos of Tom Cruise in “The Mummy,” a new “The LEGO Batman Movie” still, a new shot of Keanu Reeves in “John Wick: Chapter 2” and new looks from “War From The Planet of The Apes,” Stephen King’s “IT.” About the latter, director Andrés Muschietti (“Mama”) said while many monster movies keep their creature hidden for maximum scares and reveals, his film is doing the opposite. “Pennywise shows up, he’s front and center, and he does his show. He has an act,” Muschietti told EW. “So it’s weird all the time, and every little thing implies a further threat.” Not sure that’s the best approach, but let’s see how that works out for him come the fall.
“IT” opens September 28, “Dunkirk” arrives on July 21, “War For The Planet Of The Apes” hits July 14, “The Mummy” unspools on June 9, “John Wick: Chapter 2” unloads on February 10 and “The LEGO Batman Movie” gets animated on February 10. Check out the photos below.
