Honestly, you wouldn’t be blamed if all you know about Ang Lee’s upcoming film, “Gemini Man,” is that it stars Will Smith and is using some crazy mixtures of technology to bring a whole new level of immersion to the project. The fact that the film actually as a plot that involves clones and crazy dirt bike action is almost secondary to the aforementioned headlines. But even though Lee has pushed the technology to the extreme for his film, there’s nowhere in the U.S. where fans will get the full “Gemini Man” experience as the filmmaker intended.
According to Polygon, there are only 14 theaters in the entire country that will showcase “Gemini Man” in anything remotely close to the ideal situation. Those theaters (listed below) will show the film in 3D with 120fps HFR. However, those locations won’t have the capability of projecting at 4K, leaving the audience to only experience a 2K version of the film.
There are other locations that will be showing mixtures of the above-mentioned specs. Some will be 4K but a low frame rate. Others will be in 3D and 4K but 60fps instead of 120fps. And some poor souls will only be able to see the film in traditional 4K (or lower res) without 3D or HFR.
Long story short, all that work that went into “Gemini Man” on the technical side of things will likely be lost on the vast majority of the film-going population. Lee has said that he’s willing to get “beat” by the system by continuing to push the limits of filmmaking, but even with that expectation, he has to be a little bummed that there’s literally no theaters in the U.S. that will be able to showcase “Gemini Man” as he intended.

But hey, maybe if it’s a quality film (avoid those pesky reviews on Rotten Tomatoes if you want to keep optimistic), Paramount will find a way to give the film a proper release. Until then, just do your due diligence and try to locate the best situation for you.
