Golden Globes Predictions 2020: Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, 'Fleabag'

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
“Big Little Lies”
“The Crown”
“Killing Eve”
“The Morning Show”
“Succession”

Who Will Win: “The Morning Show”
Who Should Win: “The Crown” or “Succession”
Upset: “Succession” or “Big Little Lies”
Lowdown: Wait, you’re surprised? Please.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Cynthia Erivio, “Harriet”
Scarlett Johansson, “Marriage Story”
Saoirse Ronan, “Little Women”
Charlize Theron, “Bombshell”
Rene Zellweger, “Judy”

Who Will Win: Rene Zellweger
Who Should Win: Charlize Theron or Scarlett Johansson
Upset: Scarlett Johansson
Lowdown: Remember, they really love “Marriage Story.” Is that enough for Johnasson to overcome “Judy” herself? I mean, maybe.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
“Dolemite Is My Name”
“Jojo Rabbit”
“Knives Out”
“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”
“Rocketman”

Who Will Win: “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”
Who Should Win: “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”
Upset: “Jojo Rabbit” or “Rocketman”
Lowdown: The HFPA wants to make sure one of their awards will eventually become Oscar’s Best Picture winner. They’ll take their chances with “Once Upon,” especially if they pick who we think they’ll choose in the Drama category.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
“1917”
“The Irishman”
“Joker”
“Marriage Story”
“The Two Popes”

Who Will Win: “The Irishman”
Who Should Win: “1917” or “Marriage Story”
Upset: “Marriage Story”
Lowdown: Wait, you thought this was going to be a “Marriage Story” pick didn’t you? Nope, the HFPA is not taking that chance.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

Christopher Abbott, “Catch-22”
Sacha Baron Cohen, “The Spy”
Russell Crowe, “The Loudest Voice”
Jared Harris, “Chernobyl”
Sam Rockwell, “Fosse/Verdon”

Who Will Win: Jared Harris
Who Should Win: Jared Harris or Sam Rockwell
Upset: Sacha Baron Cohen
Lowdown: This is tough. Harris and Rockwell make the most logical sense, but, I mean, they have honored Cohen before. And even Crowe could win here. It’s one of those categories that makes you realize that a majority of HFPA members really shouldn’t vote on TV.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Kaitlyn Dever, “Unbelievable”
Joey King, “The Act”
Helen Mirren, “Catherine The Great”
Merritt Wever, “Unbelievable”
Michelle Williams, “Fosse/Verdon”

Who Will Win: Michelle Williams
Who Should Win: Michelle Willams
Upset: Kaitlyn Dever or Joey King
Lowdown: Dever or King could surprise, but they adore Williams who also took the Emmy in the equivalent category. Dever or Wever are the “fresher” choices, however.

BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
“Catch-22”
“Chernobyl”
“Fosse/Verdon”
“The Loudest Voice”
“Unbelievable”

Who Will Win: “Chernobyl”
Who Should Win: “Chernobyl,” “Unbelievable” or “Fosse/Verdon”
Upset: “Unbelievable”
Lowdown: The HFPA likes to be first. If they go with the highly regarded Netflix series they stay true to form.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE
“The Farewell”
“Les Miserables”
“Pain and Glory”
“Parisite”
“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”

Who Will Win: “Parasite”
Who Should Win: “Parasite”
Upset: “Pain and Glory” or “The Farewell”
Lowdown: This should be “Parasite,” but then again…the HFPA!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Alan Arkin, “The Kominsky Method”
Kieran Culkin, “Succession”
Andrew Scott “Fleabag”
Stellan Skarsgard, “Chernobyl”
Henry Winkler, “Barry”

Who Will Win: Andrew Scott
Who Should Win: Henry Winkler
Upset: Henry Winkler or Stellan Skarsgard
Lowdown: The “Fleabag” star fits the profile for one of this honor: British, young-ish, and gay in real life or playing gay (seriously). That’s a horrible calculation, but it um, sort of fits in a field that has no true standout.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
“Barry”
“Fleabag”
“The Kominsky Method”
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
“The Politician”

Who Will Win: “Fleabag”
Who Should Win: “Fleabag”
Upset: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Lowdown: I mean they could look stupid and pick “Maisel” over “Fleabag,” but at least Amazon Studios would still be happy. Any other series would be a genuine surprise.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE
Alexandre Desplat, “Little Women”
Hildur Gudnadottir, “Joker”
Randy Newman, “Marriage Story”
Thomas Newman, “1917”
Daniel Pemberton, “Motherless Brooklyn”

Who Will Win: Randy Newman
Who Should Win: Randy Newman or Thomas Newman
Upset: Thomas Newman or Alexandre Desplat
Lowdown: A Newman will take it. Unless 10-time nominee and two-time winner Desplat pulls off a Newman-less upset.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE
“Beautiful Ghosts,” “Cats”
Music and Lyrics by: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Taylor Swift
“I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” “Rocketman”
Music by: Elton John Lyrics by: Bernie Taupin
“Into the Unknown,” “Frozen 2”
Music and Lyrics by: Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez Lyrics
“Spirit, “The Lion King”
Music and Lyrics by: Timothy McKenzie, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Beyoncé
“Stand Up,” “Harriet”
Music and Lyrics by: Joshuah Brian Campbell, Cynthia Erivo

Who Will Win: “Into the Uknown”
Who Should Win: “Stand Up”
Upset: “Spirit”
Lowdown: Listen, the HFPA would love nothing better than to give Beyonce a Golden Globe. Unfortunately, they know your nieces, nephews, children, neighbors’ children, and half of America have been belting “Into the Unknown” for almost two months. That’s probably enough for Anderson-Lopez and Lopez to repeat.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Patricia Arquette, “The Act”
Helena Bonham Carter, “The Crown”
Toni Collette, “Unbelievable”
Meryl Streep, “Big Little Lies”
Emily Watson, “Chernobyl”

Who Will Win: Helena Bonham Carter
Who Should Win: Helena Bonham Carter
Upset: Toni Collette, Patricia Arquette or Emily Watson
Lowdown: This is another very tight category, but the HFPA love snarky camp and Carter’s Princess Margaret is just enough wicked camp with a heartbreaking turn to pull the win out.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Michael Douglas, “The Kominsky Method”
Bill Hader, “Barry”
Ben Platt, “The Politician”
Paul Rudd, “Living With Yourself”
Ramy Youssef, “Ramy”

Who Will Win: Ben Platt
Who Should Win: Bill Hader or Ramy Youssef
Upset: Paul Rudd
Lowdown: Platt sings! That may be enough to overcome Rudd and Hader. Maybe.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Christina Applegate, “Dead to Me”
Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Kirsten Dunst, “On Becoming A God In Central Florida”
Natasha Lyonne, “Russian Doll”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Fleabag”

Who Will Win: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Who Should Win: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Upset: Christina Applegate or Rachel Brosnahan
Lowdown: They should go with Waller-Bridge, but they might also want to make a statement with Applegate. We’re sticking with the “Fleabag” star.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
Brian Cox, “Succession”
Kit Harrington, “Game of Thrones”
Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot”
Tobias Menzies, “The Crown”
Billy Porter, “Pose”

Who Will Win: Rami Malek
Who Should Win: Billy Porter or Brian Cox
Upset: Brian Cox
Lowdown: Malek is a two-time nominee in this category who won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for “Bohemian Rhapsody” last year. Something tells us they’ll reward him for his last season in “Mr. Robot” this time around.

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE
Noah Baumbach, “Marriage Story”
Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won, “Parasite”
Anthony McCarten, “The Two Popes”
Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”
Steven Zaillian, “The Irishman”

Who Will Win: Noah Baumbach
Who Should Win: Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won
Upset: Steven Zaillian
Lowdown: Whatever happens here Netflix should be happy.
