Gugu Mbatha-Raw Joins Marvel Studios' 'Loki' Streaming Series

After playing a sort of superhero in last year’s “Fast Color,” it appears that Gugu Mbatha-Raw is going full-on capes and tights next year in Marvel Studios’ upcoming streaming series, “Loki.”

According to Deadline, the actress is the latest person to join the growing cast of the streaming series starring Tom Hiddleston, who plays the titular God of Mischief. Details about her role aren’t known at this time, but the report claims that Mbatha-Raw’s character is described as the female lead. Villain? Love interest? We don’t know.

From what we can gather, “Loki” aims to tell the story of what happened after the villain grabbed the Tesseract during the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Obviously, it’s a bit of a prequel, as the character died in the opening moments of “Avengers: Infinity War,” but with the Tesseract, all sorts of time-traveling is achievable. And as we saw in the very, very brief clip from the series that was shown as part of the recent Super Bowl ad for Marvel Studios’ Disney+ offerings, it appears that Loki has drawn the attention of the TVA (Marvel’s version of the time police).

Mbatha-Raw joins previously announced cast members including Owen Wilson and Sophia Di Martino. Much like the new actress, the roles for the latter two folks are still being kept under wraps. You know how Marvel is with secrets. “Loki” is written and showrun by Michael Waldron (who recently got hired to pen the new script for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) and directed by Kate Herron. The director is coming off recent stints helming episodes of the Netflix series “Daybreak” and “Sex Education.”

There’s still no exact release date planned for “Loki,” but with “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” arriving at the end of the summer and “WandaVision” coming in December, it’s likely that we’ll see a spring 2021 release for the third Marvel Studios series.
