It’s been over a year since ‘Fast & Furious’ fans got their fix, with the release of “The Fate of the Furious.” And while 2019 doesn’t bring ‘Fast 9,’ fans of a couple of ‘F&F’ characters will be happy with the upcoming spin-off, ‘Hobbs & Shaw,’ which debuts in August. Oh sorry, that’s actually not the official title.
Next August marks the debut of “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.” Yes, it’s a mouthful and does bring to mind “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” or the recent “The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story,” but the names Hobbs and Shaw don’t put butts in the seats. Gotta have that ‘Fast & Furious.’
And in a recent interview with EW, ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ actor Dwayne Johnson opens up about the film and why fans of the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise are going to be over the moon with the first spin-off film.
“You are going to fucking love this movie,” says Johnson.
“I’m sharing this with you now because I know you’re such a big fan,” Johnson said to the EW interviewer. “There’s going to be some big, ‘Oh, holy shit, I did not see that coming’ moments.”
The actor has talked quite a bit about his desire to spin-off his Hobbs character at some point, especially after the insanely popular “Fast 5” featured his debut and went on to, in essence, reboot the street racing franchise into a balls-to-the-wall action-spectacle series it is today.
But when did co-star Jason Statham become part of the plan? The actor explained, “…it was finding it in ‘Fast 8’ that when Jason and I sat down early, before we started shooting, we thought, what if we had an opportunity here where we created two characters that were biting, yet would do it a winking way, that they actually enjoyed talking shit to each other and in a really weird way enjoyed beating the shit out of each other as well. [Laughs.]”
“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” is directed by “Deadpool 2” helmer David Leitch, so you know the action is going to be nuts. The film stars the aforementioned Johson and Statham, as well as Idris Elba, Eiza Gonzalez, and Vanessa Kirby.
“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” hits theaters on August 2, 2019.
