Disney and Lucasfilm are really hoping to send the “Indiana Jones” franchise off into the sunset with a bit of a bang. Not content with leaving the franchise with the subpar ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ Harrison Ford and the studio are hoping the “final” film (is it really the end? Lucasfilm is promoting it that way…) in the franchise, ‘Dial of Destiny,’ will end things on a high note, and they’re taking the film to the high-profile Cannes Film Festival for its world premiere.
Lucasfilm has finally confirmed what has been rumored for weeks— “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is making its world premiere at this spring’s Cannes Film Festival. As you might expect, ‘Dial of Destiny’ is screening out of competition. The film is hoping to capture the pre-release magic that Cannes is able to bring that we saw just last year with the debut of “Top Gun: Maverick.” That film would build off the rapturous Cannes debut to earn just under $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.
While you might hope that Steven Spielberg would be on board to bring his franchise to the finish line as the director, he stepped aside for ‘Dial of Destiny.’ This time, James Mangold is behind the camera, and clearly, he’s excited about the Cannes debut.

“In 1995, I was honored to come to Cannes with my first film as part of Director’s Fortnite. Twenty-eight years later, I am proud to return with a slightly larger spectacle,” said Mangold. “My legendary collaborators and I are very excited to share a brand new and final ‘Indiana Jones’ adventure with you!”
Not much is known about the plot of ‘Dial of Destiny.’ The first teaser for the film showed us all of the ‘Indiana Jones’ hallmarks, however. There is some sort of lost artifact that needs recovering. There’s Indy saying quippy things and looking like an adventurer. And there are plenty of bad guys that need punching. As mentioned, Ford returns to star alongside a cast that includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.
After its Cannes debut, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will debut in theaters on June 30.
