Got a Tip?

James Gunn Acknowledges The Massive DC Franchise Overhaul: “We Are Not Going To Make Every Single Person Happy”

Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter broke a lot of news about the DCU‘s future, with multiple bombshells in the mix about a drastic full reset for the franchise. The biggest one?  Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3” is dead, and it’s possible “Man Of Steel 2” may get the ax, too. Amid that, lots of rumors too, particularly about casting turnover: Jason Momoa being recast as Lobo; Henry Cavill may or may not reprise his role as Superman.

It’s a lot for DC fans to take in, and, frankly, it’s a chaotic state of affairs. But chaos is the new order at DC Studios since David Zaslav took over as CEO for Warner Bros. Discovery; the “Batgirl” cancellation from this summer still smarts around the industry. But at least new studio co-head James Gunn cares what the fans think in all the ways Zaslav doesn’t. The director took to Twitter today to acknowledge the THR from yesterday and address the buzz. In short, this is Gunn’s take: “some of it is true, some of it half-true, some of it is not true, and some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.”

In a series of tweets, Gunn addressed all the shake-ups at DC Studios, calling the beginning of his tenure with co-head Peter Safran an “unavoidable transitional period.” But Gunn also said that the rockiness of the transition is an opportunity in disguise to do the DCU creative justice. However, that may involve decisions that make people upset, like the scrapping of “Wonder Woman 3.” “We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives,” wrote Gunn. In other words, Gunn wants fans to weather the storm that currently rocks the DCU because he and Safran want to do things right.

But what about some definitive answers about the DCU’s future? “As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to you to wait,” continued Gunn. “We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves will have a lot more questions to ask & answer.” So, no confirmation about Momoa as Lobo or what Gunn and Safran have cooking just yet. But David Zaslav does have a big presentation about the DCU next week, and that may be when fans get some of the answers they’re looking for.
