‘My Son’: James McAvoy & Claire Foy To Star In Improvised, Real-Time Thriller

Depending on your thoughts about English-language remakes, you’re either going to love or hate this news. According to ErosSTX, the production company is set to make an English-language remake of the French thriller, “My Son.” But there is some hope, as the cast and crew of the feature seem to point to a worthwhile retelling.

STXFilms will produce and distribute a new version of the French film “My Son,” with the original film’s director, Christian Carion returning to direct. The cast will be led by James McAvoy and Claire Foy in what might be one of the most challenging productions they’ve ever worked on. Why is the film so difficult to create? Well, that’s because there’s no script. And the actors don’t know what’s going to happen next.

As the studio explained, the remake is following in the footsteps of the original by being a real-time thriller that is largely improvised by the cast. The way it will work is that James McAvoy “will only be aware of basic aspects of his story and will have to improvise and react to each moment as it unfolds.” The rest of the cast will have similar situations.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Christian to create ‘My Son’ for worldwide audiences,” Fogelson said. “James will be doing the detective work of the film in real-time, on camera, to create real tension for this thriller. We like to support bold and innovative storytelling like ‘My Son,’ and Claire could not be a more spectacular or exciting choice for this film which is certain to thrill audiences.”

Of course, with less talented actors, this sort of experiment might be a horrible dumpster fire. However, McAvoy has proven himself to be one of the most respected actors, able to play a variety of characters and situations with ease, in recent films such as “Split,” “Glass,” and “It: Chapter Two.” His most recent role has been in the HBO fantasy series, “His Dark Materials.”

Claire Foy is just as adept, with leading roles in films such as “Unsane,” “First Man,” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” She’s also an Emmy winner thanks to her lead performance in the acclaimed Netflix series, “The Crown.”

Production on “My Son” is expected to begin soon in early November in Scotland. Obviously, with the nature of the film, we’ll have to see how quickly STX is able to turn it around and get it released. It would seem like it would happen fairly soon.
