Joel Kinnaman Calls ‘The Suicide Squad’ Comedically “Gory & Sexually Depraved” & Hopes You'll See It Theatrically

2021 is shaping up to be a big year for Joel Kinnaman. The actor is not only appearing in multiple films, including the highly-anticipated “The Suicide Squad,” but on TV, he’s also set to star in the upcoming second season of “For All Mankind,” which is Apple TV+’s sci-fi, alt-history series that puts the Cold War on the Moon. And in a recent episode of Lights Camera Barstool, the actor spoke about both, including revealing just how he thinks “The Suicide Squad” is a film you should definitely see in theaters and not just on HBO Max.

As we all know by now, “The Suicide Squad” is part of WarnerMedia’s highly-controversial release strategy that puts the entire 2021 Warner Bros. film slate on both HBO Max and in theaters on the same day. But for Kinnaman, he is imploring folks to see “The Suicide Squad” on the big screen. No, Kinnaman’s not being irresponsible nor a COVID-denier, but he’s clearly eager for that theatrical experience again and hopes people can see the DC superhero film safely on the big screen.

The actor goes on at length about how audiences, are “thirsting for these collective experiences together…. we feed each other and our reactions feed each other,” he said, while suggesting that this kind of experience is exactly what will make James Gunn’s movie a treat—if you’re able to see it safely under the current conditions.

“Suicide Squad’ is really going to be one of those films that is going to be so enhanced by having the collective experience because I just think it’s that kind of movie,” he said. “Even though it’s going to be shown on HBO Max, I really hope that as many people as possible go see it in the theater because I think they’re gonna have a much better experience.”

“It’s going to be very funny, very gory,” he continued. I think there’s going to be a lot of moments that get really enhanced when you are watching it with a big group of people, who are like WHOAAHH [mimics flinching in humorous revulsion], laughing together with a group, it feels good.”

Amusing repulsion seemed to be a theme that the “For All Mankind” actor was hinting at as well and throughout the interview. Asked to describe the film, Kinnaman laughed. “It’s a HARD R [Rating],” he said with a chuckle. A hard R. It’s really gory, but in a very comedic way, and it’s very sexually depraved as well. Every page [of the script] made me laugh, but then, what you read—you don’t expect to see John Cena going around a whole movie with a silver toilet on [his head], so that’s an added layer of ridiculousness that you can’t imagine until you see it.”

“The Suicide Squad” arrives in theaters and HBO Max on August 6. And if you listen to Kinnaman, you should plan on setting aside time to be in theaters to see it.
