Margot Robbie In Talks To Play 'Barbie'

In a matter of mere months, Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie will be back on the screen courting another possible awards nod with “Mary Queen of Scots” as Queen Elizabeth opposite fellow Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan. Robbie has been busy with new films including “Birds Of Prey,” that seems to be adding new, exciting cast members each week, and Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” where she’ll play the actress Sharon Tate. With her growing list of projects always expanding, Robbie may add playing one of the most famous fashion doll toys to the queue.

According to THR, Robbie is in talks to star in the leading role for “Barbie.” A possible live action, feature-length adaptation of the famous doll’s story had been circulating for a few years. After developing at Sony with little progress, Mattel is moving to Warner Bros. and in talks with Robbie to star. The actress would also serve as producer for the project through her LuckyChap banner.

Development on a “Barbie” feature has been in talks since 2014 and originally had Amy Schumer attached to the project. Schumer dropped out due to scheduling conflicts in 2016 and it was later reported Anne Hathaway would replace her. Since then, Sony tried to move a release date from August 2018 to May 2020. Months later, rights to a possible film moved back to Mattel.

A partnership between Warner Bros., Robbie, and Mattel, could prove a good working relationship. Mattel wants to further Barbie’s brand of empowerment, and with Robbie and Warner Bros. already working together for “Birds of Prey,” a deal could prove positive for each party. While a director has not been announced, “Wonder Woman” helmer Patty Jenkins has been circling the project, but no substantive talks have taken place. Still, it seems that “Barbie” could be on the big screen in the coming years, Dreamhouse definitely included.
