For months now, there has been this silly, social media-created competition between two films that are scheduled for release on the same day—Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Sure, there is real competition for money when two big-budget studio films are released at the same time, but the odds are that both of these films will be huge hits for their respective studios. And with success at the box office comes sequel talk. While it’s highly unlikely Nolan would dream of an “Oppenheimer 2: Opp Harder,” you have to assume Mattel and Warner Bros. are hoping for more “Barbie” films in the future. Well, apparently that’s already been discussed.
In a new interview with Time magazine, Margot Robbie, the star and producer of the upcoming “Barbie” film, talks about the idea of a sequel to her highly anticipated summer film. When it was first announced, the idea of a “Barbie” film was enough to make people laugh. But after seeing the marketing and understanding that filmmaker Greta Gerwig might have something sneaky up her sleeve, film fans are dying to see “Barbie” and are already excited about the possibility of more in the future.
For Robbie, she admitted that more “Barbie” films are already in discussion, but it is far too soon to know when it might happen and what a sequel would even look like.
“It could go a million different directions from this point,” she said. “But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”
Again, it’s looking as if “Barbie” will be one of the summer’s breakout hits. Unless the film suffers absolutely dreadful reviews, you have to assume that people will flock to see the film based on the star power of the cast and the early marketing that shows there’s a tongue planted firmly in cheek throughout “Barbie.” That said, the early conversations about a sequel will likely turn more serious after the theatrical run happens.
Until then, if you’re excited about “Barbie” and the possibility of more films in this universe, you can watch the first movie on July 21. Yes, the same weekend you’ll likely also see “Oppenheimer.”
