Mark Romanek's 'Never Let Me Go' Aiming For An October 1st Release Date

Those fervently awaiting the release of Mark Romanek’s third feature film, “Never Let Me Go” — the adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro — can finally relax. The picture now has an October 1st release date in the U.S.

Or at least it does according to the filmmaker himself.

On Twitter this weekend the filmmaker said, ” ‘Never Let Me Go,’ is finally done and has a release date. It will appear in select cities starting October 1. Trailer on its way very soon.” Asked for details outside the U.S. he backed away from the Oct 1 date slightly, saying, “Sorry I don’t have the U.K. or European release dates for ‘Never Let Me Go,’ but I do know they will be on or around the US date of October 1.”

Either way, an October release date is in the cards which is pretty much what we’ve been hearing for months now.

We have to admit, we’re part of the camp that’s pretty excited for this picture and it ranked high on our Most Anticipated of 2010 list. It boasts a near impeccable cast including Carey Mulligan (“An Education,” “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”), Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield (“Red Riding” trilogy, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”), Sally Hawkins (“Happy Go-Lucky”), Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Richard, and Andrea Riseborough (just note, Mulligan is actually the lead character not Knightley).

The script was penned by Alex Garland (of Danny Boyle fame including, “The Beach,” “28 Days Later” and “Sunshine”) and while described early on as a sci-fi thriller, having read the script, we should note that it’s more of dystopian drama with a fairly melancholy bent (Spike Jonze said he cried when he saw it, we wouldn’t lie to you).

Rachel Portman, who won an Oscar for her work on “Emma,” as well as scoring the likes of “Ratcatcher,” “Chocolat” and “The Duchess,” is writing the score to this picture which should dovetail nicely with the wistful mood. The cinematographer is Adam Kimmel, who lensed the gorgeous Spike Jonze I’m Here” short,” (read our review) also starring Andrew Garfield and uhhh… recently was arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a child in Connecticut… (yikes).

So when’s the trailer coming? All we know is “coming soon,” hopefully that only means a few weeks away. The picture is a Fox Searchlight film and maybe it’ll show up at the Toronto International Film Festival? Romanek also scores points for this wise tweet, “Go see Nicole Holofcener’s ‘Please Give.’ It’s really good.” This writer couldn’t agree more.
