It’s official: just a day after Michael B. Jordan‘s interest was confirmed, and weeks of speculation, Austin Butler is in talks to star in Joseph Kosinski‘s reboot of “Miami Vice.”
Variety reports that the actor, like his potential co-star, is still in early talks, but the news confirms rumors about both of their castings that have swirled for weeks. Butler would play James “Sonny” Crockett, originally played by Don Johnson and then Colin Farrell in Michael Mann‘s 2006 film, while Jordan would play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, played first by Philip Michael Thomas and then Jamie Foxx.
If he’s cast, it’s another huge part for Butler, who swiftly rose to A-list status after his turn as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann‘s 2022 biopic, “Elvis“; he earned a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for the role, as well as an Oscar nod for Best Actor. But Butler’s rise to stardom started earlier, arguably with his breakout role in Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.” Other recent roles for the actor include “Dune: Part Two” and “Caught Stealing,” which hit theaters this past August.
As for Kosinski, he’s coming off of “F1: The Movie” for Apple and, before that, 2022’s smash hit “Top Gun: Maverick.” Kosinski’s plans for “Miami Vice”? Here’s the project’s logline: “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.” That sounds like the pic will indeed take place in ’80s instead of present day, but stay tuned for confirmation on that. Kosinski will also shot the film for IMAX, and serves as a producer with Dylan Clark, while Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy pen the script.
Universal has “Miami Vice” slated for an August 6, 2027, with production to begin early next year. But will Butler and Jordan be the movie’s leads? Stay tuned to see if their deals get finalised.
