Michael B. Jordan may be stepping into the neon-drenched world of the famed 1980s thriller series with “Miami Vice,” an all-new film version announced by Universal Pictures. The film will reimagine the glamour and corruption of South Florida’s underworld, with a release date set for August 6, 2027
The film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, best known for “Top Gun: Maverick” and the racing spectacle “F1.” The screenplay is being handled by Dan Gilroy, with Eric Warren Singer contributing, while Glen Powell is rumored to co-star alongside Jordan.
Sources tell Deadline, the story draws on the pilot and season one of the original series, tuning into the era’s excess and aesthetic while rooting the narrative in undercover duties and the stylistic fever of mid-’80s Miami. “It will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami,” states the report.
This marks the first return to the franchise since Michael Mann’s 2006 feature version starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, a visually arresting but polarizing experiment in existential cool. The new take looks set to honor that legacy while steering it toward a sharper, more contemporary energy — one that blends the original’s seductive aesthetic with Kosinski’s precision filmmaking and Gilroy’s morally ambivalent storytelling instincts.
For Michael B. Jordan, the project continues his evolution from actor to creative powerhouse, following his directorial debut with “Creed III.” With “Andor” writer and “Nightcrawler” filmmaker Dan Gilroy penning the screenplay and Kosinski at the helm, Universal seems to be positioning “Miami Vice” as both a prestige genre revival and a high-concept summer event — one where style, substance, and star power are all part of the chase.
