Michael Stuhlbarg Says Luca Guadagnino Is "Serious" About 'Call Me By Your Name Sequel'

Last year’s “Call Me By Your Name” was a force to be reckoned with on the awards circuit. At the Oscars, the Luca Guadagnino-directed film captured three nominations and won one for Best Adapted Screenplay. And ever since the film became a hit, Guadagnino has been very vocal about wanting to come back and work on a sequel. However, since the filmmaker is busy prepping his next project, “Suspiria,” for its big fall debut, all talk about “Call Me By Your Name 2” has been stopped.

But for actor Michael Stuhlbarg, who played a supporting role in the film, that doesn’t mean that Guadagnino is any less serious about the potential sequel. In an interview with Far Out, Stuhlbarg was asked about a sequel to the acclaimed film.

“He [Guadagnino] seems to think that we might be able to pick up the action a few years later,” the actor said, “to see what’s happened to these characters and the choices they’ve made, and life after this particularly momentous summer for them all. But it sounds like something he’s serious about, and André Aciman is thrilled I think at the idea.”

When asked if there was any idea of what the plot might look like, Stuhlbarg said, “There are portions of the book that we didn’t mine as thoroughly.”

However, if the film does come together, as Stuhlbarg thinks it might, the actor would be game to come back. “I’m curious about it myself and I would be thrilled to be a part of any kind of a sequel. It was a very special experience for all of us. I think it would have to be some kind of unique thing from what it was, but I would absolutely be game for trying,” he said.

Perhaps we’ll hear more about the potential sequel as “Suspiria” makes the festival circuit, debuting at Venice, which kicks off in a week.
