‘Midsommar’ Trailer: 'Hereditary' Filmmaker Ari Aster Teams With Florence Pugh For His New Nightmare

Sometimes talent just shows no signs of slowing down, especially when they find other gifted artists to work with.

When director Ari Aster’s debut film “Hereditary” opened last year, much of the buzz around the film surrounded actress, Toni Collette (“Little Miss Sunshine”). The film ended up searing quite a memory (or induced trauma, you decide) in the minds of many, and not only for her incredible lead performance, but also the intelligent and confident direction of Aster.

The filmmaker will release his follow up project, “Midsommar” later this year, and for his second feature, Aster has assembled a strong cast of up and comers, including the amazing Florence Pugh (“Fighting With My Family”) who seems to never stop working, and is surely on her way to being a star – any day now, really.

Other than a recent tease by A24, not many concrete details have been released regarding Aster’s new project, but the film sounds akin to a freaky cult venture along the lines of “The Wicker Man” or perhaps last years “Apostle”. The director has previously described the picture as an apocalyptic breakup movie.

Here is the synopsis:

A couple’s vacation to a Swedish village takes a sinister turn when the insular townspeople invite them into a series of rituals that render their pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving, in this dread-soaked and viscerally disquieting psychological thriller.

“It’s Scandinavian folk horror,” Aster said, “[It’s] the only other horror movie I have.” But, despite all the praise he’s received from fans, the director may not be returning to the genre that launched his career again anytime soon. “I love the genre, I consider myself a genre filmmaker in that I want to play in every genre. I would love to make a musical. I have ten other scripts that I’ve written that I want to make and there are other things I have. I’m writing a sci-fi film and there are at least four or five movies that I have ready to go that I am excited about making that I’d like to do in succession.”

Time will tell if the theme of family trauma trickles down into his other moviemaking ventures. The film also stars Jack Reynor (“Sing Street”), Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) and William Jackson Harper (“The Good Place”, Paterson”).

A24 will release “Midsommar” on August 9, 2019.
