Netflix Pleads With Fans Attempting The ‘Bird Box’ Challenge: “Please Do Not Hurt Yourselves”

No one on Earth could have ever guessed that “Bird Box,” the Sandra Bullock thriller directed by Susanne Bier would be the most memed film of the final weeks of 2018. What seemed, from the trailers, to be a fairly typical thriller, with echoes of “A Quiet Place,” turned into a cultural phenomenon that film fans couldn’t escape from in the closing days of 2018. And now, as viewers have apparently entered a new level of meme-ified stupidity, Netflix has to step in and make sure everyone knows to celebrate their love of “Bird Box” safely.

What started as simple memes, showing Bullock and her two kids in the film with blindfolds on walking past a variety of things, reached a new level in recent days. Now, instead of just sharing simple memes, fans have been doing what is called the “Bird Box Challenge,” which much like the Tide Pod Challenge and various other “challenges” on social media, includes people risking their health doing stupid stuff for the sake of comedy and Internet fame.

The typical “Bird Box Challenge” video includes people wearing blindfolds, attempting to do the very same things that the characters in the film do, such as walking around town and driving their car. Needless to say, what was truly capable in the film world is most definitely not a possibility in the real world.

Today, the streaming service tweeted, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”

Sadly, with the state of social media in recent years, all this tweet (and probably this article, sue me) will do is bring light to the stupidity and perhaps make people interested in doing the challenge themselves. This is why we won’t be including any challenge videos in the article. If you want to see idiots doing stupid shit for the slight chance at fame, you go right ahead.
