Netflix Picking Up TV Series Based On Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen'

Director Guy Ritchie has been churning out movies at a rapid pace since the success of his Disney film “Aladdin” (a remake of the beloved animated film) but is looking towards a return to television after turning his film “Snatch” into a short-lived series. The filmmaker has been developing a show based on his 2019 film “The Gentlemen” that starred Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey as an American pot kingpin living in England that is attempting to sell his business to a rival only for things to south real quick.

Deadline reports the series is getting close to coming together with streaming giant Netflix in negotiations with Miramax TV to greenlight the British gangster series. Ritchie will direct two episodes and co-write the pilot’s script. No names were mentioned for the cast in the reporting.

Mickey Pearson is an American expatriate who became rich by building a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business, it soon triggers an array of plots and schemes — including bribery and blackmail — from shady characters who want to steal his domain.

We’re still waiting on casting news and if any actors/characters from the original film will be reprising their roles. It was recently announced that Colin Farrell, who plays Coach, will topline a Penguin-focused streaming series for HBO Max that takes place within the universe of “The Batman.” Charlie Hunnam, another star of the film, isn’t a stranger to television — his popular outlaw biker series “Sons of Anarchy” was a landmark for FX.

Ritchie is about to release the Jason Statham spy actioner “Operation Fortune,” is developing a WWII film based on the first group of British commandos, and is currently working on a new film that stars Jake Gyllenhaal. How this will fit into Ritchie’s busy schedule remains to be seen.
