Netflix Unveils Fall Release Dates Of Awards Contenders Including 'The Laundromat,' 'Marriage Story,' 'Dolemite' & More

Unlike other film studios, Netflix isn’t necessarily concerned with the exact release date for its films. Whereas most traditional studios have to think about the long-term playability of a film and how its box office might affect its awards season aspirations, Netflix doesn’t have to worry about that sort of thing, as the service only puts its high-profile films in theaters for a matter of days before its streaming debut. That being said, Netflix does have quite the busy schedule this fall, as a number of its films are debuting in theaters ahead of their respective streaming launches.

Today, Netflix announced (via Deadline) a number of films that will be arriving this fall after festival debuts and small theatrical runs. While many film fans will wait for the streaming debut to watch these films from the comfort of their own homes, there are some that are going to be excited to learn that they’ll have the opportunity to see new films from Martin Scorsese, David Michôd, Noah Baumbach, and Steven Soderbergh on the big screen.

Debuting first is the new film “The Laundromat,” from Soderbergh. The ensemble drama is led by an all-star cast that includes Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, and Jeffrey Wright, and tells the story of the infamous Panama Papers. “The Laundromat” will debut in select theaters on September 27, with the streaming launch following on October 18.

Next up, Eddie Murphy returns in an R-rated comedy film “Dolemite is My Name,” telling the incredible, funny true story of the rise of Blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray More. The Craig Brewer-directed film will arrive on Netflix on October 25.

November kicks off with the Netflix debut of “The King” on November 1. The David Michod-directed Shakespearean drama stars Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Robert Pattinson, Sean Harris, Lily-Rose Depp, and Ben Mendelsohn. A trailer was just released this morning.

Wash Westmoreland returns with his latest film that he wrote and directed, titled “Earthquake Bird.” The film stars Alicia Vikander and tells the story of a woman involved in an intense relationship with a photographer in 1989 Tokyo. “Earthquake Bird” arrives on Netflix on November 15.

Finally, you have the festival favorite “Atlantics,” which surprised everyone from this year’s Cannes. The film, directed by Mati Diop, will have a short theatrical run beginning on November 15 and is set to arrive on Netflix on November 29.
