Paul Schrader Says His Next Film Is ‘Non Compos Mentis’ & Is A “Noir, As A Kind Of Sexual Obsession”

Despite many of his generation taking time between films, Paul Schrader is a filmmaker who has kept working quite prolifically over the decades. Since 2002, he’s directed no fewer than 11 features. That’s the kind of output that filmmakers half his age would love to match. And even though he’s just now premiering his most recent film, “Oh Canada,” at the Cannes Film Festival, he’s already got his next one lined up.

Speaking at a press conference about “Oh Canada” at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (via Deadline), Paul Schrader gave an update about what his next film is going to be. And it seems to be yet another surprising choice.

“I’ve written a noir, as a kind of a sexual obsession, called ‘Non Compos Mentis’ about the stupid things men do for love,” he teased.

Not much else is known about the movie at this time. We know that he has yet to cast the film, only just now presenting the script to actors. But the good news is he shared that the production already has funding.

Before we get “Non Compos Mentis,” we have the aforementioned “Oh Canada.” That film is based on the novel “Foregone” by author Russell Banks. The film tells the story of a famous documentary filmmaker who is terminally ill and gives one final tell-all interview. “Oh Canada” is playing as part of Cannes and an exact U.S. release has yet to be announced.
