With coronavirus hitting film’s biggest superspies pretty hard over the last couple of weeks (not to mention the thousands dead) and the Democratic primaries making us all feel like we’re in for a very long, arduous 6 months, the world needs something to help us all get through these tough times. Thankfully, Paul Thomas Anderson is here with his BFFs in Haim with a new music video.
Kidding aside, it’s been a few months, but never fear, PTA is here with his fourth Haim video in roughly seven months. And as you have come to expect, Anderson and the rock band sure know how to make a good musical clip.
The video is for the song “Steps,” and much like the previous videos in the Haim videography with Anderson’s name attached, the footage doesn’t necessarily have some grand plot or story it’s trying to tell. Instead, in the “Steps,” the various sisters are mostly sitting in a bathroom or their bedroom, in their comfiest underwear, while they put on messily put on lipstick, brush their teeth, and croon about a partner that just doesn’t understand them. Yes, that’s reductive and I’m definitely missing the larger picture, but I’m recovering from Super Tuesday, so cut me some slack.

Even though “Steps” is far from the first time that PTA has teamed with Haim, the video does mark a first between the various people involved, as the clip is co-directed by Danielle Haim (she’s the sister that sings throughout the video and plays the drums at the end).
