“Psycho Therapy” presents a distinct storytelling experience for filmmaker Tolga Karaçelik. The writer and director told Variety it was the first time his work deviated from “personal experience or from a political situation that I was experiencing in Turkey.” The film does have some real-world inspiration, though, with Karaçelik later mentioning how a conversation about couples therapists led to “food for thought.”

Karaçelik puts together an intriguing cast for his newest project. Steve Buscemi, John Magaro, and Britt Lower star as the pivotal trio. Buscemi delivers another memorable performance as Kollmick, a former serial killer who may not be completely over his past ways. A pair of respected talents join the acclaimed actor. Magaro portrays Keane, the writer at the heart of it all. He notably drew praise for his work in Celine Song’s “Past Lives.” Lower is another standout, having won raves for her performance on the outstanding series “Severance.”

The film’s official synopsis:

A struggling writer in the midst of a divorce befriends a retired serial killer who incidentally becomes his marriage counselor by day, and killing counselor for his next book by night.

Psycho Therapy: The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write about a Serial Killer” debuts in NY theaters April 4. It expands to additional theaters and On Demand April 11. Watch the newly released trailer below.
