‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’: Zachary Levi Gives Name To the 'Shazam!' Sequel

Zachary Levi and the cast of “Shazam!” are apparently sworn to secrecy on the new script for their upcoming movie. And their new castmembers. And pretty much everything that the DC FanDome audience would like to know about the new movie. So if you were looking for significant updates on “Shazam! 2,” this might not have been the panel for you.

But that doesn’t mean they didn’t leave us with a little taste of things to come. In addition to Levi, Asher Angel, Faithe Herman, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Meagan Good all joined Levi for a joke-heavy conversation about what they can and cannot say about the “Shazam!” sequel, including a guest appearance from actor-comedian and Sinbad. Sinbad even joked about the long-running internet rumor that he starred in a nonexistent film of the same name. “I’m relegated to the false memories of the Tide generation,” he joked.

But if you are one of those fans looking for more than just an admittedly A+ Sinbad joke, the cast did let slip one important piece of information. The full title of the sequel will be “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” a title that speaks to more explorations of the source of Bill Batson’s powers. “Shazam!” may not have been a massive hit for Warner Bros. – the film only grossed $363.6 million worldwide and $140.3 million domestically – but that figure was enough for a sequel and the budget was lower than most massively expensive tentpoles.

“Shazam!” was directed by David F. Sandberg, known for no-budget horror short films under the online pseudonym ponysmasher and for his 2016 directorial debut “Lights Out.” He is expected to return for the “Shazam!” sequel, but only made a brief appearance in the Q&A.

Once set for April 2022, during the pandemic, Warner Bros. recently rescheduled “Shazam 2” for a fall, November 4, 2022.  Given those timelines, don’t expect Shazam!’s main adversary “Black Adam” to appear as the main villain. Starring Dwayne Johnson, “Black Adam” is currently set for December 2021 and his own franchise is just getting off the ground and is introducing the Justice Society. It’s safe to bet Johnson and Levi won’t face off until “Shazam 3” so keep your patience levels high if the classic Shazam vs. Black Adam fight is your main end game.
