Over the past decade, FX has found a niche as a home for irreverent shows about culturally specific communities. Few of the network’s recent hits garnered more critical acclaim than “Reservation Dogs,” which tracks the antics and aspirations of Indigenous teenagers who dream of escaping life in Oklahoma for sunny California.

The series, created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, was notably the first American show to feature an all-Indigenous set of writers and directors, not to mention a predominantly Indigenous cast and production team. Aside from earning “Best Series” nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, the show won Independent Spirit and Peabody Awards for its breezy and authentic portrayal of life in a corner of the country that has rarely been explored on scripted television.
Now, the main cast has been re-assembled for a second season, with Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor all reprising their roles as the titular cohort of Indigenous teens. Other returning cast members include Elva Guerra, Dallas Goldtooth, Jon Proudstar, Gary Farmer, Sarah and Jennifer Podemski, and Zahn McClarnon. Tamara Podemski will join the show in a recurring role after previously working with Harjo on his directorial debut “Four Sheets to the Wind.” (Harjo is also reportedly developing an untitled heist series for FX with novelist Johnathan Lee.)

The end of last season saw the dissolution of the Dogs as Elora (Jacobs) slipped away to California with the gang’s archenemy Jackie (Guerra). Meanwhile, Bear (Woon A-Tai) and Willie Jack (Alexis) have been left behind to deal with their own futures. Considering FX shows’ penchant for developing passionate fanbases, the second season of “Reservation Dogs” is likely to deliver on the promise of its charming debut.
You can catch the next season’s first two episodes exclusively on Hulu beginning August 3. Check out the trailer below:
