‘Retreat’: Krysten Ritter To Star, Executive Produce Series Adaptation Of Her Novel

It only seems fitting for an actress to star in an adaptation of a book she’s written, right? According to Deadline, that’s exactly what Krysten Ritter will do with “Retreat,” her 2025 novel. Ritter will also executive produce the series adaptation, which will premiere on HBO Max sometime next year.

And the starring role in “Retreat” sounds like it’s tailor-made for Ritter. The Hitchcockian dark comedy will star the actress as Liz Dawson, a grifter who gets caught in her scheme impersonating a dead woman at a Mexican resort. It only gets worse, though, as she’s forced to keep up the act as people start dying around her. Who’s the murderer, and will Dawson be able to escape these circumstances with her real identity unscathed?

It’ll come as no surprise that Steve Yockey is involved on “Retreat,” as this set-up is in the same ballpark as another HBO Max series of his, “The Flight Attendant.” Like that show, Warner Bros. Television will produce Ritter’s show with Berlanti Productions, and Yockey adapting the novel. Ritter and Yockey will serve as executive producers along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman.

Ritter, a TV stalwart, recently starred in “Dexter: Resurrection” and has the next season of “Daredevil: Born Again” on the way on Disney+. Other recent TV credits for the actress include the HBO Max limited series “Love & Death” and Netflix‘s “Nightbooks.” On the film side, Ritter starred in “Stone Cold Fox” last year. The actress wrote her debut novel “Bonfire,” in 2017.

As for Berlanti Productions, other TV series from the banner include a live-action “Scooby-Doo” show for Netflix, “Stillwater” over at Prime Video, and two pilots: “Foster Dade” at Hulu, and “How To Survive Without Me” at HBO Max. “The Flight Attendant” remains Brelanti Productions’ biggest TV hit, earning Emmy nods for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series.

Expected “Retreat” on HBO or HBO Max sometime in 2027.
